A New Year, an Old Home & a Giant Yard

We have taken possession of our little green house again. After 3 years of renters it is time to move home. My dad's cancer isn't progressing, he's holding his own, and my mother says she has things under control. There is no reason to rent out my house anymore! So back we are in our small house on a giant lot.

Because of the enormity of this lot I am taking the entire month of January off from jewelry making in order to get my yard tamed. My son Jack-Stewart - all of 8 - announced last year that he wanted to grow up to be a farmer (as well as a scientist and a builder) - but right now he is fixed on 'farming' - even if it means living in a city, with all its limitations. He wants a cow and a horse. So instead we settled on having chickens - which are fine to have within the Portland city limits. I think he has forgotten about his desire for pygmy goats "just like the ones our neighbor has."

So, if you feel inclined to follow our journey to start an urban farm (gardening and growing things is actually my hobby when I'm not making jewelry - but I grew flowers - not food), it should definitely be interesting... Jack and I are up for the challenge! #1 on our list: the blackberry and the english ivy - ahhhhh.

Okay, I know I said that the Abernethy show I did in November was going to be my only show of the Holiday Season, but I couldn't turn down the invite on this one... this looks to be a great show. I hope you can make it down, as I'm even going to have a few pieces in my newest color story: Migration. I currently have a fascination with grey and purple and love putting these shades with other neutral and sometimes not so neutral (dark fuschia) colors. It's the best part of what I do - bringing unusual colors together to tell a story. I also want to thank everyone that helped to make TQB Designs successful for 2011 & Happy Holidays! - Pink

2011 Holidays in Portland: TQB Designs at Abernethy Art & Craft Fair

This is my one and only show for the Holiday season. Here is your chance to see the breadth of my collection, all my new designs, colors and shapes. Of course, after this you can always purchase my work at the retailers in Portland that carry my work year round (see my website: tqbdesigns.com). But, they don't always carry all the styles and colors.

As many of you know I love to support the Portland Public Schools and because this is just a one-day show, I was able to fit it into my schedule and hopefully do some good to bring arts to our kids:) Please come out, if you can, and support this wonderful cause and buy some local art. One and Only Show: Sheboygan, Wisconsin

I am again lucky this year to have been selected to participate in this fantastic group show at the Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Christine End is the curator this year and it looks to be a fantastic show. If you are in the Sheboygan area please do stop in to see the work. We artists worked so hard to make some spectacular thing (I know I did) and we love to share.

This year the colors combinations I submitted are "Hadrian's Wall" steeped in neutral greys, black and one spot of color with a luscious purple, complimented by "Arbol de la Vida" also in neutral shades of brown, purple/grey, rosy shades. Also submitted work in "Atomic" in blues, greens and browns - a very contemporary "mid-centry" combination of shades. Along with the new colors there are some great new styles - using my sterling bar as in my Waxing-Waning earrings, Branched necklace, Comet, and Spinner pendants, in the combinations of "Hadrian's Wall". I'm also very excited about my newest earring style: Ovaled Dot Hoop (you can see one in mulberry in my Etsy store). It has been a long time coming to make an earring that isn't cluttered or massive due to over decoration, but in its own right - just with one of my beaded beads. These are a statement-maker:)

It was a great year of experimentation, shape and color discovery for me and I feel that the work I have submitted this year at the One and Only is very reflective of this new-found inspiration.

Home again, Home again: 10 shows in 5 months

I am home again, making work for my retailers for the holiday season and filling my Esty store with new things for those that can't get to one of my retailers in Oregon, Wisconsin, or Minnesota. I'm having a wonderful time creating in my studio. This may sound a little on the bland and boring side for some, but after my crazy and eventful summer, believe me, I'm in no mood for drama...

While on the road I realized mid-season that I was starting to run out of parts and had to find a place where I could solder, etc... This presented quite a challenge. But, not for my husband, Jason. He not only found me a place to solder (a hotel room with a private balcony) but it was in a beautiful location. I had always wanted to go to Mackinac Island (all the way at the top of Michigan). It is a quaint island where cars are not allowed. It has one of the most beautiful hotels ever located there: The Grande Hotel. We stayed on the mainland across from the island and took the ferry over the next day - between my working time and shows. The smell of horse poop was a bit overwhelming and there were bicycles everywhere. We rented a couple and rode around the entire island. It was unreal to be in a place that had no cars and didn't smell like exhaust. I highly recommend a visit:)

Anyhow, It was such a nice break after the long, arduous, and hot days of the Ann Arbor Street Fair. I was located next to a person selling digeradoos (is that spelled right?) - you know - those Australian instruments that make sounds like a dying cow? Okay - it was fine in the beginning... but after day 2 (of a 4 day festival) I was ready to put that digeradoo... well... you know....

Anyway, the festivals after Michigan were all much cooler and the weather was great. I had especially good show in Minneapolis - the weather was fine at 78 degrees for the 3 day festival and we got to go to our favorite pub in St. Paul: The Blue Door...ymmm deep fried green beans! Then I was on to Jackson, Wyoming. What a fabulous place! I had forgotten how beautiful that was there. Wow! And the show was absolutely top-knotch with some spectacular artists and professional.

On our way home we spent a little time in Yellowstone. I couldn't go all the way to Jackson and not spend some time in Yellowstone. Then we decided that we had a little time to spare and drove up and stayed at Glacier National Park as well. I had never been inside this part. The last time I was there I took the road around it to get to Browning (wanted to see the Museum of the Plains Indians - and if you're ever in the area - it is WELL worth the visit). So, we took the "Going-To-The-Sun-Road" through Glacier, with it's spectacular vistas and massive mountains, and big horned sheep, seeing what little there was left of the glaciers (almost gone - scientists say they will all be gone within the next 15 years). As you read this posting you will see some of the photos I took over the course of the summer from Washington D.C. (when I did the show in Philly) - to Flathead Lake and Glacier National Park in Montana.

I had amazing Mexican food in Downtown Detroit (go-figure), I got to pet the dog of a secret service agent outside the White House, and got stuck in a 1 hour buffalo traffic jam in Yellowstone Park. What can be better than that?

Thank you so much to everyone that visited me at my shows. I got to see some of my repeat customers (like in Sheboygan - LOVE Sheboygan, WI) and some of my Etsy customers -that was a thrill (Catherine:)! I never expected to see those people from my virtual world in the real one:) It was also great to see new cities and old familiar ones (I hadn't been back to Philly in 10 years - the place of my birth). I hope to do something like this again next year - perhaps you have a great festival that I should know about in a city near you! I'd love to see it:)

2011 TQB Designs North American Tour: First Stop - Glenwood Springs, Colorado and the 114th Annual Strawberry Days Festival

I'm heading out soon for Colorado and to Glenwood Springs for the Strawberry Days Festival. This is their 114th festival - Wow! 114! Anyway, this town looks amazing and I can't wait to try out the hot springs... especially after those long days standing on your feet during the festival. If you are in the neighborhood, please stop by my booth and say hello. I have loads of new designs and colors.

Bazaar Bizarre at Maker Faire - Bay Area California

With a solid night sleep conquered in the last week, I have to say the lack of was well worth the trip to the San Francisco Bay area for the Bazaar Bizarre at the Maker Faire. Make Magazine knows how to put on a party - that's for sure - and this was was amazing! There was enormous sculptures made from stone - some with large pieces of steel that turned, big steam trains, people on giant velocipedes, loads of steam punk and computer geeks, and I say that with love...

I had a great time at the Bazaar Bizarre and of course, as always at shows, had some wonderful neighbors! I met some amazing people and was even interviewed by Fredric Paul of All Business, for his blog : you can read that here . All, in all, I highly recommend any show put on by Bazarre Bizarre and definitely will apply for this next year. What a great time....

Copy, Copy, Copy - my sincerest catalyst for change.

Okay, so after years of making some of my original designs I have decided instead of being upset about being copied I would just move on and be creative and come up with new and more inspiring creations. This is one of my most copied designs on record - my "Pin-Dot Earring". I can't tell you how often I find it on Etsy and on Flicker being copied... makes me feel - well... actually inspiring. Moving on already:)

I find it to be a great catalyst when a design of my becomes common-place. I'm sure that many of you fellow artists can relate to this since I'm sure that it is a common phenomenon. What do you do? Use that energy to come up with something fantastically creative. You will feel so much better about what you do instead of living in the past with an old design. Time to move on:) Good for you!

Where do you go first? 40 Directions...

I know many of you have been wondering where I have been. As everyone can probably understand, life can slip you some unexpected turns and twists and mine is in the midst of just now beginning to settle back into a routine.

My summer was extremely busy what with 4 summer shows in the Mid-West. All of them very successful beyond my expectations. I had a great time, but as anyone knows who does this type of thing, it really isn't a vacation. In order to save on money my husband and I drove to all my show with all of my equipment, from Portland, Oregon PACKED into our Volvo, along with two kids and two dogs (our Rat Terrier - Daisy and our Jack Russel - Rosie)...phew! I have to say it was an adventure. Jason is the best - he did most of the driving so that I could make beads from my tray on my lap. I had to make beads between shows as I ran out of certain color combinations and at each rest stop I would count how many I made in a sort of competition with myself and the miles yet to travel.

I did two shows in Wisconsin. Wisconsin, you say... yes, I love Wisconsin. It is truly a beautiful state and Madison has the most amazing capital building. This Art in the Square show was crazy - at the end of the second day a major thunderstorm moved in and because I am used to the temperate weather in Portland, Oregon, I thought that my tent was perfectly suited for any city, weather, etc. Well, I was wrong. Mid-west weather requires a much more durable tent... so, next summer when I go back a re-purchase will have to be made. At one point Jason and I were hanging on the tent in hopes that it wouldn't fly away!

I also love Sheyboygan, Wisconsin. If you don't know where that it, well its about a 3 1/2 hour drive north (depending on the traffic) of Chicago, on the shores of Lake Michigan. It is during their Summer Festival this year that I experienced my first tornado. Yes, tornado. The sirens went off and everything - but the locals seemed unfazed by it, letting me know that tornados never come to Sheboygan because of its close proximity to the water. Needless-to-say, I was rapidly throwing jewelry into a bag while people are running past and into the Art Center building. In the end the locals were right. The tornado didn't come 'close' to Sheboygan... it hit three miles outside the town. And my knees were jello the whole time afterward!

We did find time after Sheboygan to get down to Milwaukee to the Harley-Davidson Museum. I had been wanting to go there for Years and it was absolutely fantastic. I wasn't sure how the kids would like it but they had the best time... go figure! It really is a great place for them, sitting an some of the motorcycles, listening to engines, playing some of the games, looking at all the crazy styles - they even had one of Elvis' motorcycle.

So, with more shows after that, by the time I got home all I wanted to to do was relax and never get in the car again! It took me a few weeks to re-group and get back to things by mid-September. So, my daughter started high school and my son started 2nd grade. Also, my father's cancer is progressing and I needed to help my mother out there since I had been gone for so many months. He is holding his own right now I'm happy to say:)

After my summer adventure, and a much depleted jewelry stock, as well as being pulled in 40 directions - Etsy and even some of my retailers are suffering the consequences of my busy schedule. As of November, I now have a new routine and some new retailers as well, and I'm back to work on Etsy and finally feel mostly caught up.

Now I know that may of my loyal customers (and future customers too) have been waiting anxiously for a full listing of all the colors I have in my collection. This is my full collection of all the tiniest colors I have for your viewing pleasure. I will subsequently be posting future collections of beads sizes 11 and 8 as I take those photos over the next month. But, for now - here is my biggest selection of colors that I use in every woven bead size from a 4mm core all the way up to my biggest 1.25" of 25mm.

Oh where, Oh where can you be? A shipping story.

When I first opened my Etsy store 3 1/2 years ago, I offered free shipping for my first 2 years. Last year I finally had to include a shipping charge, however I felt that I did better than most by upgrading the US only shipping to "Priority" for the price you pay, therefore you will get it faster for your buck - and I have no intentions of changing that policy now.

Now, I know that losing pieces is the cost of doing business - but lets face it - I'm not a big "Box" store that can absorb losses readily. And that brings us to the new shipping policy. In comes The United States Postal Service. After doing some lengthy research and pricing I have decided to use their International shipping and insurance, with my European Union and Canadian customers only. This increased cost for shipping will include full insurance value on your items and give you the ability to track its location. In the event you want to purchase more than one piece in the shipment the additional cost will be $1.00 (a break if you are purchasing higher end pieces as the cost of insurance through USPS is steep).

Having lost 4 shipments in the last year (one of them was almost $200.00) is not a good number. Also, I have been getting complaints that I don't put "gift" on the customs tags. Well, that's not legal. I use the same Post Office every time I ship and the people know me. In fact, the fine, if they catch you is quite large - so as the old saying goes: Honesty is the best policy. So, please don't ask me to put "gift" on your purchase. I'll just have to give you a big sob story about how I don't want to break US Federal Laws:)

Anyway, I don't want this to sound like a big complaint against my Canadian and European friends - I really do value your business, really! I just can't afford to ship to you without full insurance and tracking ability. Thank you so much for your understanding. If you have any questions about or requests about alternate shipping options if you live in Canada or Europe (like self-insuring to save money) let me know - I'm happy to ship that way to you so long as you are the one taking the risk.

2010 - A TQB Plan So Cunning You Can Brush Your Teeth With It...

...okay so it isn't exactly my words (Have any of you ever watched Rowan Atkinson in Black Adder)... Anyway, I do have some exciting plans for 2010. I am developing new designs - actually started them this winter when I was in the midst of mania creating work for all my galleries. I have "Stones & Bones" and "Hands & Hearts", I have "Skulls" and "Flowers". Seems to be a yin-yang thing going on with me right now. Anyway, did I say I was excited already?

I will also reveal some new colors - these are some of the hot colors for the Spring: oyster, delphinium, windward, nautical, and avocado. I'm also bringing back some of my older colors making them new again: cherub, hot pink, dill flower, and flame. Of course I will have new color stories titled: "As You Like It", "Hadrian's Wall" and "Cafe de Nuit". All these inspired combinations are a direct result of my experiences and imagination: of the past - history if you will - and what I believe these stories, people, and places would convey if told with color.

I would also like to let you all now that I am planning on doing more shows this summer (if the juries allow of course) in the Mid-West. I so enjoyed doing the 2009 Mid-Summer Festival of the Arts in Sheboygan, Wisconsin at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. I will be back there again this year and hope to get accepted into some shows in Michigan, others in Wisconsin and Minnesota before the summer is over. I'll keep you posted on those developments.

On the flip side, because the bulk of my show time will be in the Summer, for those of you that live here/near Portland, OR, so far I don't have any plans to do shows until the Fall, so look for my work with my Retailers. My first show for 2010 will be Art in the Burbs in Tigard - late October. I will do one more show in December, but haven't decided which it will be. I am trying to focus on my fantastic retailers more this year in order to get them fresh work more often. They are tremendous and extremely loyal and I want to treat them right! I have retailers in Charlotte, NC, Chicago, Il, Seattle & Olympia, WA and 2 in Portland, OR.

I also want to treat my Etsy customers better. This last year was crazy-good for me on Etsy. At one point I had 22 special orders between September and December and I wasn't able to list any new work. I know that many of you were counting on me to list some new things in order to shop for the Holidays. Without doing shows in the Spring, I will be able to make/stockpile more beaded rounds and therefore make more work to list in my Etsy store for your shopping pleasure. Thank you so much to all of you that were sooo patience with me last year. Your support continues to make my jewelry a success!

All that said, I hope that everyone had a fantastic 2009 and are looking forward to a fresh start with 2010. I know I am. And remember, as Coco Chanel said: "The best color in the whole world in the one that looks good on you." I hope I create that color for you...

For me it's about the color - Bead Lesson No.2

I don't know if you can say that the beads I make are original, since many people out there can make beaded beads. I can say through years of trial and error, discipline, and perseverance, I have managed to create a practically perfect beaded sphere (or oval, square, barrel, disc) that is, in my opinion, my best vehicle for story-telling; for me the beads are all about the color, bringing them together in an original combination of shades. I imagine in color and associate memories with color, smells with color, ideas with color, feelings with color... you get the idea. In order to get this out of my system I work directly with color everyday, creating my jewelry designs. The beaded rounds I make are a means to an end and the metal work I do is the final touch to a color story about: unrequited love, Frida Kahlo, or the French Rivera. Each of my bead colors are chosen deliberatly as a symbol of something I know to be certain in my life or the world.

The unique and personal memories of me are what I try to convey in the work I make. Each color symbolizes a reaction, a longing, or a comfort. We all have these and convey them in different ways... mine just happens to be with color.

My newest and most popular color story right now titled Oaxaca is featured in my Etsy store: dijon, bronze age, chartreuse, mint, tahiti, tide pool, and charcoal. What story do you know that can be told with color?

Confessions of a circles, dots, rounds, spheres - aholic

I am having the BEST time with this. I have always wanted to learn how to make my own beads and viola! - Thanks to Robin Epstein of Bunny Huggins - I am making all my dreams come true. Really, if you live in Portland you can contact Robin and she will give you some lessons on highly detailed metal-smithing and time saving techniques.

You will see that I have produced a beautiful bead made from my bead caps - and I have created a new simply beautiful earring that I think I'll call "smashed dot". I love making little dots and adding them to links, etc... this is could get way out of hand! Look forward to more of these - hopefully - this holiday season, but I'm not promising anything. My standards are very high and I have to make them to a certain level of quality before I will sell anything in my store. What can I say I'm a perfectionist:)

Leveled to the ground - one of my Favorite Portland Landmarks

The Union Pacific Building always reminded me of home. Yes, on the way to the Peninsula of North Portland. Well - now it's completely leveled and the only landmark left is the big smoke stack. I'm so happy I chose this landmark as one of my photo projects in a photography workshop I took last year... so glad:)

I wonder what "they" did with that big Union Pacific sign and the letters... there was just something about that building - the industrial-ness of it all. It looks so empty there now... what are the plans I wonder, as I watched them disassemble it brick by brick and as one metal sheet after the other came down. Bye-bye.

Thank you JMKAC Midsummer Festival of the Arts

I did find some time to make a few new things for the last show I did. I really wanted to do something unusual with my beads and found a secret stash of disk cores ( I had made these in the past many years ago). I was only able to make one pair of earrings and one pendant - and they were some of the first pieces to go, as was the new pendulum necklace.

So, this was a very successful show for me and as some of you may have heard already, I came away from this show with an Award: based on professionalism, originality, display, and quality of work (see, here I am in my booth) - and my husband did a beautiful job getting it exactly how I envisioned it I think:). Anyway, I have to say I was STUNNED! I wasn't at all expecting to be given an award - which allows me to come back to the show next year without being juried in or paying the fee. I'm excited already for next year... and I hope to get into a few other shows in the Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan area next summer - what a great part of the country! I had a spectacular time, the people were fantastic and I especially loved Milwaukee - it looks like it is in the midst of a resurgence and what an exciting time it must be to live there...

Remembering what used to be...

Sometimes customers force me out of my comfort zone. I have a fantastic customer that lives in Asia and she really wanted a multi-colored bead woven pair of earrings. Well.... I had been there and done that many, many, many years ago - and just really love making solid color beads. However, because this customer is so super nice and always asks for special requests with much enthusiasm and joy (I can just tell over email that she is smiling while she types) - I relented. And I am so glad I did. I have to say I remembered how much I love making my "dappled" beads, as I used to call them, almost 10 years ago. Just tinges of each color coming together to make a story all their own on one bead.

Thank you so much Cindy - you keep me honest and continue the inspiration in my work. Look for more of these "dappled" beads in the months to come. They will be limited edition - so get them while they are posted:)

Sometimes we are presented with the most inspired sentiments. In my case it was when reading about my favorite opera La Traviata. I have been in love with this art form since I was 17 and first heard this music in one of my favorite movies of all time The Music Teacher, in which the young male singers have a dueling match of voices - amazing! So, in reading about this heart-wrenching and melencholy opera I came across a letter from Alexander Dumas to his lover Marie Plessis. They were very much in love, but during that time money was a big factor in whether or not people could be together... alas, it was not meant to be for Alexander and Marie, but the letter explains it all:

My dear Marie, I am neither sufficiently rich to love you as I would wish nor sufficiently poor to be loved as you would wish. So let us forget, both of us - you a name to which you should be almost indifferent, I a happiness which has become impossible. There is no point in telling you how sad I am because you know already how much I love you. Goodbye, then. You have too much feeling not to understand the reason for my letter and too much intelligence not to forgive me for it. A thousand memories, A.D.

Now that Spring is nearly over and Summer just on the horizon many of you have been waiting patiently for my newest colors to show up as well as some of the new designs I've been up to. I want to let you all know that I have been working diligently (in between fighting off bronchitis and a series of migraines) on new designs (and some old ones too) showcasing these newest colors. I'm very excited about what I've developed and I hope you are too. It's amazing what you can do with some simple materials and tools: heavy gauge wire, liver-of-sulfer, hole punch, hammer, disc cutter and dapping block. Here's a preview of what I am currently creating.

TQB Designs at JMKAC - Midsummer Festival

I am happy to say that I was accepted into the Midsummer Festival of the Arts put on my the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. So, if any of you are in the Sheboygan, Milwaukee, Chicago area and would like to see me and my work it looks to be a fabulous show and I would of course love to meet you! Come on over to the JMKAC and check out the show. It runs Saturday and Sunday, July 18th and 19th 2009.

I will have a number of my bigger pieces as well as a new line of Circle jewelry - very much in the same vain as my bead caps - with necklaces and earrings using these textured rounds either in bead cap form or donut shape - can't wait to get started on this...

Lisa Kaser : Inspired Art, Incredible Talent

I consider myself to be a big art collector and when I find an artist's work that I love I become extremely enthusiastic about acquiring some... and boy, have I. I have quite a collection now of one of my very favorite artists ever, Lisa Kaser. My goal one day is to acquire one of her originals!

It doesn't matter how many times I look at one of the many prints I have purchased, I always see something new or become inspired all over again with a project that I am working on (I have my collection hanging in my own studio). Lisa's illustrations are inspired and beautifully crafted right down to the clever titles of each: Image No.1 - Cornmeal Pancakes & Mexican Chocolate, Image No.2 - He Flies Purely for Pleasure, and Image No.3 - Tuesdays Were Reserved for Sharing Recipes.

Lisa Kaser just opened her first Etsy store a few weeks ago and I highly recommend that you head on over to make a purchase! I have posted a few of my favorites here that she currently has in her store and I'm sure over time you will find that you just have to have "that one" and pretty soon your collection will be as large as mine!

Look Ma, No Hard Drive!? ... another lesson...

Many of you may know by now how fond I am of lessons. Well, this time the lesson is: do not procrastinate. I had thousands of photos on my computer, but never made the time to get many of them over to my external hard drive to archive them for safe keeping. As a result, over the last two weeks, I have been dealing with an ailing and failing computer. I took it into my local MAC repair shop and it was too late. The hard drive failed as they were trying to back it all up....

So, remember kids - go and get yourself an external hard drive (or better yet back everything up to a DVD - much less likely of failure if stored correctly) for all those files you want archived. You just never know when your computer's hard drive, mother board, etc... will fail on you. I am very happy to have Mac back - and we are getting along much better - even though we are a little lighter on the interior...

Okay - I have submitted one of my photos for consideration in the JGP Magazine for the 22nd Issue (check out my photography blog for details here: fractionalstop). I know that many of you appreciate this fantastic photographic on-line site and are soooo glad to see it still in action after having heard that it may disappear... but, thankfully it has not!

I hope that you all can take the time to VOTE for the image I have submitted (or any of the other fabulous ones by other photographers) under the "Zen" Theme. I will keep you posted as to the other two: "House" and "Fairy Tale"... they will be submitted shortly. The deadline for voting is March 31st.

The Arts are Alive and Well... really? It's a Community.

Yes! And don't let anyone tell you different. Now, I preface this statement with some expected caution and diligence on the part of the artist, of course. In these troubled economic times we all have to be smarter, savvier and persistent. I know I do. And I take this very seriously. But, these are all skills any successful artist has any time of year, no matter the economic situation, I have found.

Now, I don't want to come across as gloating, I simply want to relay my own story in hopes that it may motivate and discourage the "nay-sayer" in either yourself (Yes... I can definitely be an "Eyeore", I've been told) OR perhaps those family and friends around you that ask in their melancholy tones "wow... how is it going?..." waiting to hear back from you some corroborating story of your troubled and tourmulant downturn. My best advice (even if it may be true)... don't succumb to them. I have to say that I was busy over the Holiday Season and continue to be very busily working to this day. I attribute this to the fact that I HAVE to stay positive to stay in business. I also find myself wanting to share what ever it is that I have learned over the many years of being a self-employed artist and find when giving freely back to the community I get so much more in return.

I know this may sound cliche - but, really as part of the Arts Community here in Portland, OR I feel it is my duty to stay positive. If not for myself but, for those that may not be busy or successfully/consistantly selling their work right now. I also do this for those artists that are coming into the community. They need to know that it is okay to try and be an artist not matter the trends or economy.

I am very proud to say that I will be speaking to some of these up-and-coming artists at my almamater, St. Mary's Academy in Downtown Portland (yes, I was one of those crazy Catholic School girls...). This school, being one of the very few all-girl high schools left in the US, taught me so many valuable lessons. The best and the one I use most: don't be afraid to take a chance - be yourself. You may be surprised at how strong you are.

I hope that I will be able to convey this to those young, enthusiastic and adventourous minds and spur them on with a sense of excitement to explore the possiblities out there in the Art world that is Portland and beyond.

It is a new time and it is palpable. I hope that everyone takes advantage of this re-newed energy in the air. I know I will... keeping Eyeore at bay.

Crafty Wonderland Super Colossal Holiday Sale - December 14, 2008

This is the Holiday Event of the Season and it isn't to be missed - this will be an amazing event of over 180+ Vendors! It is the Super-Bowl of Craft! I will be in attendance and I can't wait - hopefully it won't snow - BUT, if it does Trimet and the MAX train go right to the Convention Center so there is no excuse not to attend:) Hope you can make it!

They will be handing out 200 swag bags to the first visitors through the doors. We'll also be creating an event program to hand out at the door. It will be a cute little booklet with a map of the vendors, interviews, crafty surprises, and advertising.

Rule #1 - The Power of Thought = Common Sense

I was, of course, thinking the other day, about how it is my ideas are developed, nurtured, and finally realized. I have to say that I have never really been one to mull things over for long periods of time before acting. I am a split-second decision maker when it comes to something I really want and know. Much like when I quit my full-time job 3 years ago. I went to work that morning, sat down at my desk and decided "Yep. This is the day I give notice. Can't do this anymore."

So, what's my secret? It's my power of thought. YOU have this too you know: If you "think" about it nothing is created until it is a thought first. In my work as a photographic/development consultant I am always trying to convey my message to those that I help. I often tell them that the secret of my success is I see it AND believe it.

If you can see it happening in your thoughts - can it really happen? My answer is yes. Without a doubt. Speaking of doubt... that's usually when I start to flounder (create a dry spell and a slow-down within my work-life).

I realize that this may sound simplistic, perhaps even a bit "new age" but, I have always thought of it really as "common sense". It is also my Rule #1 when I said good-bye to "the man", ditched that day-job, and started working for myself.

I know that everyone has their own story of "Common Sense" or focused drive. Take the time to remember it and believe. You may be surprised at how able you are to really do what you want.

da Vinci Arts Middle School - Art Show

Yes... it's that time of year again - the Annual "da Vinci Arts Fair" - Hurray! So grab your bags and get-a-shoppin'. This is a Holiday Show not to be missed:) I will be there with bells on (okay... probably beads, yes)... and I will of course have all your favorite designs as well as a few new ones and of course COLORS!... so many colors.

Some of my other very favorite artists will be in attendance as well: Lisa Kaser and here fantastic illustrations - I just can't get enough of these and I buy them every year to expand my collection. I always see something new whenever I look at them - they are so inspiring to me! And Lisa comes up with the most fantastical imagery every year... can't wait to see what she has this time!

Carolyn Holman will also be showing her work at the show - she has Amazing encaustic paintings that you won't want to miss - so beautiful! I love this one of the bottles...

...and lastly to keep you warm and cozy, Kristina Perry of Liv & Lotus - has the most gorgeous scarves and darling little chicken hats for your little ones... hurry - cause these go fast (how can you resist that cute chicken)! Kristina uses mostly all reclaimed materials and recycled bottle fleece and creates patterns with natural fibers and anything bright and sparkly. You'll want to get a few of these for your loved ones for those cold days ahead!

A folded wonder... doing what I can to help

Okay - so I've been contemplating for some time on what I can do to keep my paper products for packaging to a minimum (aside from using newspaper that I get for free and re-using cardboard boxes from time-to-time) . For those of you that have purchased a piece from me, you know how I take pride in the packaging and presentation. I figure since I put so much work into the piece inside the box...well, the box should be something special too.

So, I think I have come up with another small re-purposing solution. I have decided to stop buying packaged Japanese paper for making my origami cranes and started making my own. I have discovered that, while looking through some of my very occasionally purchased magazines (and those scavenged from family and friends), not to mention the junk mail and catalogs I get, there are some really fantastic images that can translate into my paper origami cranes! Hurray - I love when I can save some money, save a tree, and re-purpose something that is normally forgotten and thrown out after a week.

Also, come Spring, I will be adding a new item (however, technically it isn't
really) to my store. I have been making my crane cards for many years and sell them to stores in the Portland area and feel that I can now share them with others in my Etsy store. They are really beautiful and I will have then listed singly and you can also purchased them in groups of 3, 5 or 7 for slightly less. And, who knows what else may develop out of my crazy fascination with these folded wonders...

These cards are very similar in feel to how my jewelry is packaged when you receive a piece. I would love to list these in my store before the Spring - but, I think I should focus on trying to get work in my store and filling the many, many special orders still outstanding by all my VERY patience and WONDERFUL customers out there.

Art in the Burbs 2008

It benefits the Tigard/Tualatin Schools and this Foundation funds learning opportunities for all 15 schools in the Tigard Tualatin School district. Yes... I can say it... I slacked off a little these last few weeks in the marketing department. I failed to inform all my great customers of the latest show I was attending: Local 14. What can I say - you missed a FABULOUS show. I'll be sure to let you know next year so that you're sure not to miss it.

This organization, made up entirely of women in the arts, is an amazing amalgamation of talent, organization, drive and confidence. With this show I had to volunteer some of my time to help set up and tear down, and it was my pleasure to help out. I have to say when I showed up the night of the Gala Event to show my work, I was in complete awe of the beautiful set up of work and the professional displays. It was really an event - not to be missed!

So, the final result was this was far-and-away the best show I have ever had! ...I can't wait until next year. I met the most amazing artists and women and felt so welcomed into this obviously tight-knit group of talent.

Thanks to Ellie Wellstead, Wendy Avner, Cindy McDougall, Karen Hustwaite, Sarah Lajoie, Laura Berman, and of course Ann Munson (the eggs and begonias are amazing), for all the laughs and giggles to make it through the last 4 days of selling. Back to School and I Feel Like Sharing!

I know that some of the new artists to Etsy may feel as if they aren't getting the exposure they want - and believe ME - I felt exactly as you did when I first started (and don't feel discouraged). I thought I gave it a good shot... but, really it took me a full year to figure out how this Etsy thing worked. After that I decided that I needed to invest money in order to make some. So, I listed. I listed often, everyday, every few hours and re-listed.

Shortly after that I decided to focus on my images. This is the real trick to making it work on Etsy. This is how you will end up on the Front Page frequently. I feel as if I have progressed in three stages with my photo skills: Novice - pic.1 (bad, with no idea what I was doing) , Apprentice - pic.2 (better, seemed to have figured out the lighting trick), and Experienced pic.3 (I love photography and all it nuances).

I often look back at some of my very early photos. My first camera was a Fuji FinePix from 2006 with only 4 mega pixels. All I can say right now is: what a difference a few mega pixels make:) I'm not complaining about my great little "point-and-shoot"... not at all. I love it and I actually would like to get another point-and-shoot by Fuji (the shutter on mine broke and I decided it would be a good idea to upgrade).

So, now I use a Samsung GX-10 and I absolutely love, love, love it. I only shoot in manual mode - so much more control over your environment that way. You can do this with your own camera - even if it is a point and shoot. Take some time to read through your manual (or get it on-line if you had a fung-shui attack and threw it out - just go to the makers website). Also check out the specs on you camera easily on the dpreview site - really helps if you want to know something fast about your camera. You really will see a difference in the quality of your shots if you control the exposure and speed of the photos.

I have to say that I am extremely lucky with all that has come my way. I now take photos for another Esty store: Trillium Artisans (check out the great work they have). I have also taught some photo workshops to new Etsy artists on how to better see and photograph their work and I also do one-on-one lessons with some of the Artists through Trillium. It has been so much fun and I hope that my enthusiasm for photography is infectious.

So, get out there (before the Winter sun hits) and take some fantastic pictures... it really is worth it. Persistance always prevails!

I Heart Bead Weaving (a.k.a: I need more time)

Many of you may have seen my newest Masterpiece: Knotted Dots Necklace in "Cote d'Azur". I have to say it was hard to part with this beauty - but, decided to share the joy of it with everyone. There is so much care and attention in this one necklace. It isn't often that I get time to make such a piece (and the reason they are always made in limited quantities). The trick to these is finding the time in my busy schedule to make them.

There is something to be said about sitting down and weaving one of my largest beads. At 25mm (once finished it is 1.125"), I have to have some time to revel in the repetition. It is my meditation. It takes me almost 4 hours to make this center-most bead - in this necklace with a total of 23 beads.

So, I posted my Masterpiece, (this project I have been anticipating for many, many, many months), in my Esty store. There will be more of these of course. I am challenging myself to get one more in my store before the holiday on-slot. But, time is getting away from me with all my special orders, wholesale orders and upcoming shows for September, October and December.

I want to send a big Thank you to ALL my customers and supporters of my work while I am still in a state of calm before the storm ... I love what I do and you make it all worthwhile:)

A Great Event it was not - an expensive lesson to learn...

I'm not usually one to whine - however, I have now experienced my first Total Bomb for a show. The Taste of Tanasbourne was far and away the worst show experience I have ever had. After two of the three days I sold only 1 item. It was discussed with the "people in charge" if you don't want to show up on Sunday - you don't have to. Well... needless to say - I won't be attending the show on Sunday - just incase any of my Portland customers plan on attending - I won't be there:)

The show grounds were extremely disconcerting. It was a minefield of mole holes, mouse pits, and DIRT. Everything in my booth was covered in a fine coating of DIRT - yuck! And, due to the terrain it wasn't wheelchair or stroller friendly. There was a lack of signage to direct people to the show and it was BEHIND a major shopping area - no one knew it was there.

If it were up to me I would never have charge admission either - the entire event should have been FREE:)

So, lessons learned. I will be better at my research when doing an outdoor event next summer - and I am looking forward to my next 2 shows in October that are inside!

Taste of Tanasbourne - August 15th - 17th, 2008

Now that the weekend is over and it's Monday again - I'm sure you're planning for the next weekend already - yes!? Well... I will be showing my work at the "Taste of Tanasbourne " in Hillsboro, and it looks to be a great event.

I will be showcasing some of my newest color stories for the summer (my newest favorite piece is my large hoop earrings in Sunset Blvd)! I hope that all in the Portland area can make it out to see me. It will be three days of music, food and art all in one place and all outdoors so that you can enjoy the beautiful summer weather!

The organizers of this show have also provided a discount to all those that know about someone showing there - so download your coupon for a reduced entrance fee!

Of course with all this fantastic summer weather here in the Pacific Northwest, I am constantly inspired to create new color stories or seek out new colors when I can. I have been working with these tiny seed beads for over 10 years so, it can be difficult to find new colors that I want to use in my work... but, I always seem to find them - or perhaps they find me... I'm not sure after all this time...

So my newest blues are (from bottom to top) "cloud", "tidal", "delphinium", and a soft, matte finish green called "clover". I also found some new warm tones (from bottom to top): "apricot", "green tea" and "dandelion" - I can't wait to make some of these gorgeous yellow beads! It took me awhile to find this opaque and shiny finish yellow - a truly saturated color.

Anyway, thank you to ALL my customers - I couldn't do this without you - and I hope to see many of my Portland regulars there... I hope you enjoy your summer no matter where you are or what you're doing! I know I am!

Color Block Friday: Let the Sun Shine! - 2008.05.23

In honor of the coming big Memorial Day weekend and, in my opinion, the official start of summer, I am excited to showcase some new colors for the coming hot season! I am so excited about the combinations I have created and the new colors I've discovered...

Of course, we like to associate Summer with fiery colors like red, orange, yellow. I actually think of the many trips I had taken in summers past to New Mexico and Arizona . I envision the beautiful scenes of the Grand Canyon at sunset and the trip I took to L.A. during the heavy months of September when the warmth of the setting sun makes everything golden.

In honor of some of my favorite Summertime destinations, I have created two new color combos:

The first selection is 4-Corners. I still have visions of the Southwest and absolutely fell in love with the canyons and vistas, in my travels there. The beautiful blue skies and the fantastic rain storms of June. The sky is so beautiful in its stormy splendor - dark and foreboding with the rain hitting the earth so hard it bounces back up and create a layer of steam. The red rocks of the earth, the adobe homes, and stunning town plazas.

This new color story includes a new favorite color of mine called Flame. I love the way it can look very red or every-so-slightly red-orange as in this combination: tourmaline, turquoise, sandstone, tangerine, cinnamon, flame.

My other selection is called Sunset Boulevard. Inspired by the views and landmarks along the way: the neon, the setting sun, and of course all the beautiful people. This famous road winds its way through the heart of Los Angeles County, cutting through Hollywood Blvd - where dreams are developed (or dashed in some cases). It works its way past famous landmarks, such as The Roxy, The Whiskey a Go-Go and The Laugh Factory where Robin Williams performed and also The Rainbow Bar & Grill (aka. The Rainbow Room) where Marilyn Monroe had a blind date with Joe DiMaggio. This particular section is know as Sunset Strip. Further on it travels through Beverly Hills, Bel-Air and finally ends near Malibu at the Pacific Ocean.

In this color story I wanted to create a sense of strong contrasts in beautiful feminine shades - here's the line up: lemonade, root beer, peony, raspberry, honey, clementine - come together in this summertime collection. The two new colors in this collection - Raspberry is a shade of red with strong pink highlights and a matte and slightly iridescent finish - really beautiful. Clementine is also one of my new favorites - this is a truly fantastic summer color - a must have!

I think that many of you know by now that I love not only making my beads and jewelry but, I also LOVE photography. It has been my pleasure to create photography that projects beautiful imagery as well as providing functionality (I hope)... Many of you respond so well to my product photos that I have now made this a part-time job!

Starting this last March, Trillium Artisans hired me to take all their product photos for their website and Etsy Store. I was flattered and thrilled to take on this challenge of course! This has now developed into not only a photography job but, I also teach photo workshops on how to better photograph your products for your Etsy Stores. I try to make these workshops a fun, challenging adventure you take with yourself and your camera - helping others discover that there is always more than one way of seeing what is in front of you. I also try to give ideas of how they can develop their store with whatever it is they make - to keep it fresh and draw in buyers with original imagery.

Looking at the world through your viewer is an amazing way to see things. You look at things at such different angles - ways you would never normally look with just your eyes... and sometimes at maximum magnification.

So, in light of my new found (part-time) job, I want to invite all of you to view my photo blog: fractionalstop. I created this blog in early April of this year and perhaps some of you have already noticed the link to the right for my new blog. (I call this photo: "Time Tunnel") I have taken up photography, not only as a means to convey my jewelry story but, also as a way to refresh my creativity. Making beads is my No.1 love but, it is always nice to have a fresh "focus" to keep from burning out that "love". With my new blog, I will post images - NOT jewelry related but, hopefully inspiring for all those out there that need a new vision every-now-and-then.

Also, my latest entry talks about the details of my newest photo adventure with JPG Magazine. If you love photography you MUST check out this website/magazine if you haven't already. I have submitted three new photos to their "Publishable Themes: Creatures, Street Fashion, and Favorite Hangouts". If you like any of them go ahead and sign up and vote on them! Believe me it is quite addicting once you start browsing all the fantastic photos - you'll want to keep voting and voting and voting and voting... you get the idea!

Anyway, I know that it has been awhile since my last Color Block Friday and any posting for that matter (Mother's Day kept me busier than I anticipated). I do plan on having a Color Block for May in order to feature some of the new Summer Colors...

TQB Designs Fashion Show - Part I - 2008.04.18

I promised you images of my work being worn and I have finally posted them or you here (with much tension due to the fact that Blogger went down an hour before the 5pm reveal)! I have also included some images of the squares (officially on sale April 23rd in my Etsy Store). I hope you enjoy the show. There will be another in a couple of months with more of my work. This first item is showcasing one of the beaded square beads. I actually began beading squares long before I started beading rounds. Funny, I know, but I just thought that rounds were so conventional and I wanted my work to stand out. Well, realizing how wrong I was, I dived into the round world and left behind the cubical delight. Having not made squares for many years I decided to bring them back in a limited quantity. They definitely take longer to make and I have a stock of square cores that won't last forever. So I decided to feature new work with squares through the month of May. I would like to do this annually. Think of it as a Mother's Day treat!

I have featured here the "Slide Bracelet" priced at $62.00 in beautiful Summer colors of Crimson, Strawberry & Bubbles. My favorite way to wear this piece is with one of my "Knotted Dots Bracelets" priced at $148.00. I have it paired with one in the same color story of "Strawberry Fields".

Next I wanted to feature a series of earrings in my most popular designs and range of sized as well as prices. The first pair of earrings are in one of my new colors for Spring & Summer (and will be featured in the April Friday Color Block, along with a new color combination).

Earrings:

Lucky Shoes Earring - Watermelon $38.00. This earring is made up of my handmade & hammered tiny horseshoe and ear wires. The beaded round measures 8mm (.25"). Made up of all oxidized sterling silver parts with a finished length of 1.5".

Bead Dot Coil Earring - Mulberry $38.00. This earring is made up of my hand-coiled stem and finished with my handmade ear wires. The beaded round measures 11mm (7/16" or just shy of .50"). Made up of all oxidized sterling silver parts with a finished length of 2.5"

Pin Dot Earring - Faded Denim $44.00. This earring design was an inspiration. I love the sculptural effect while wearing them! They are all totally hand fabricated and I even named the ear wire "hair pin curl". The beaded round measures 9mm (3/8"). Made from all sterling silver, the finished length on these beauties is 2.75".

Feather Earrings - Chartreuse, Cilantro $74.00. I'm not really good at picking favorites with my designs but, I have to say these are at the top of my list. They are funky, different and definitely make a statement! Fashioned with my handmade ear wires and hammered "feather", two large links suspend dual color beaded rounds, each at 11mm (7/16" or just shy of .50"). I love paring these greens together! Made from all oxidized sterling silver parts, the finished length on these 3".

So, I of course, wanted to also show you a few of my more popular necklaces and in a range of sized and prices. I hope that it gives you the perspective you need on the size of each bead I use with an image close in and one with a little more distance - enjoy!

Necklaces:

Darling Shoe Necklace - Faded Denim $38.00. Similar to the lucky shoes earrings, my handmade & hammered little horseshoe frames a small beaded round. This necklace is actually one step larger than the earrings with the bead measuring 9mm (3/8") and the pendant length of 1" & width of 5/8" (just over .50"). It is made up of all sterling silver parts with the clasp accented with real freshwater pearls. This necklace comes in your choice of length up to 18" at this price.

Sphere Necklace - Ocean $46.00. This design was inspired by the world globes that used to be in every classroom. They rotate on a base and I was alway fascinated by other places and the colors that made up the globe. I know that these are fast becoming obsolete but, I love mine and love to daydream about where I want to go. This delicate wishbone encapsulates one of my beaded rounds of 13mm (.50"). This gives a pendant length of 1.25" and width of 5/8". It is made up of all sterling silver parts with real freshwater pearls accenting the claps. This comes in your choice of length up to 18" at this price.

Beaded Round on Chain 16mm - Sweet Pea $38.00. This is a statement necklace for sure. Beautiful and simple is comes floating on a bead chain. This bead measures 16mm (5/8") across and takes me about 1 hour to weave. Since I do use commercial chain on this that isn't adjustable I only offer it in length so of 16" or 18" for this price. I do have available 20" and 24" at an additional cost, if interested. You can also get this sterling silver chain either bright brush finished or oxidized.

Feather Necklace - City Centre $78.00. Again, it is hard to pick favorites but, much like the earrings of the same name, I LOVE this necklace.. I think it's the gypsy in me. With beautiful beaded round charms in 5 shades, as well as two large links and my handmade "feather" this pendant hangs from dual-textured chain. Made up of all sterling silver parts and the clasp accented with gorgeous freshwater pearls, each beaded round measures 8mm (.25"). I like to wear this necklace long at 18" but, you can get in in any length up to 18" at this price. Of course additional lengths are available for an added cost.

More Squares sneak peek:

I have to say I really do love rounds - but, every now and then I do get a hankerin' for a cube. The squares I make are 11mm (7/16") in size (the same size as the beads on my feather earrings). I love to pair them with the round beads to give a piece interest and non-conformity. These are some of the new designs I have created just for the square shape - and of course, I will make a few with some of my existing desings - but, I do think that these lend more to the cube rather than the sphere - Enjoy!

Square Stem Necklace - Crimson $42.00. A square is slipped onto this hammered bar to give a balance of strength with the delicate nature of the beaded cube. I love to convey a sense of deliberate substance with the chunky silver running through the middle of the woven bead. Then finished with the reflective, delicate beaded chain. All parts are oxidized sterling silver and the chain lengths available at this price are 16" & 18".

Square Drops Earrings - Crimson $45.00. This is a little different than the pendant - instead of the bar running through the bead I have it gently suspended from the end. I wanted the square bead to have a bit of round added to it - so I have the large round headpin at the bottom to attach it to the oxidized silver bar above. These earrings, with my handmade ear wires, measure 2.5" in length - very dramatic in the crimson red.

I will have the Square Stem Necklace available in many of my colors in either a bright brushed finish or in the darkened brushed oxidized. I have a collection of them shown here in the blue shades of: Faded Denim, Ocean, and Peacock.

Color Block Friday: What's in a Word? - 2008.03.28

Now, since I've been making these beads the most common likeness people use is berries. I love this, mainly because I could exist on berries everyday for the rest of my life! Okay, well... maybe not everyday but, you know what I mean. Organics, things in nature, etc... inspire me in what I do and how I work. Even the smallest phrase; collection of words, can bring about a different point of view with what I do. I take words very seriously...

For instance, take my newest color story "Bryant Park". I think of a big city with all its diversions. Cement, trees, colors of purple and gold - like royalty. This was my inspiration for this particular color story. Earlier this month I highlighted one of my newest colors "Crocus" in a gorgeous flowery shade of purple. I wanted to stay on the purple path and continue with Bryant Park by highlighting the other purple in that series: Mulberry.

This brings us back to the berry likeness. I can remember my earliest memory of my beads and how someone wanted me to make a bowl full and eat them like berries. Of course, in the early days, I didn't see this. Now, I wish I could remember who it was that gave me this image of organic delight. I now see my beads hanging from every tree, shrub and exotic plant. They are little pods, berries, and seeds. Droplets of water that glisten. Or, honey ladened buds of gold.

Next month I will have a new color story featuring some shades not yet used. 1st Friday in April... check it out!

What's the Difference? A Bead Lesson - no.1

I know that many of you understand what my work entails... tiny seed beads. But, how many of you know the difference between the Regular "Single Bead on Chain", the Giant one, and the size I use in my "Linked Bracelets"? Well, the difference is in the seed bead.

Here's the skinny: Most of my work uses the size 15/0 seed bead (as in the image here with red beads - pic.1). My Giant 1" beaded rounds (25mm) use size 8/0...see, much bigger (pic. - 2). The reason I use the 8/0 for my giant 1" is that it takes as much time to make this size as it does to make the regular size 3/4" with the 15/0. Seed beads are categorized by size with numbers - the bigger the number the smaller the seed bead. The sizes I use most are 15/0, 10/0 and 8/0 .... are you saying "Huh"?

Let me explain... the 3/4" (actually, just shy of 3/4" or 16mm) single bead on chain is made with my 15/0 seed beads and they are very tiny as in this poppy bead here on the chain (pic. 3). I weave each bead to the next one-by-one and this takes time. The 3/4" bead takes approximately 1 hour to weave. Now, if I were to use the same size 15/0 on the 1", as you can see there is a significant difference in size from this image (pic.4), - and I do occasionally ... then it would take me just over 2 hours to make. So, it's not that I don't LOVE to make the 1" "Tiny Giant" (as I like to call it), it's just that I have to be in a certain mind-set when I want to make them. Usually it's many in one sitting. At any rate, there are several contributors to the infrequency of this bead but, time is the biggest. (Wait until I you see the necklace with these giants... it took awhile but worth every moment...very exciting!).

So, now you know why first, I charge more when the see bead size gets bigger, as on my newest "Limited Edition - Disco Inferno" bead (I used size 10/0 - same as the bead on my Linked bracelet) and second, why you don't see the Giant size with the 15/0 seed bead.

I do hope this was helpful information about the size that you like or want or just deciding which bead works best for you. In a later post I will give you more perspective of the beads while modeled. I know sometimes that it can be difficult to know what the jewelry looks like in relation to the body... so watch for the work being modeled!

Etsy Artist Feature - Little Put Books

There are so many great artists on Etsy - it begs the cliche´ "So many artists... so little time..." I have to say that Ryan of Lit tle Put Books is definitely one of those great artists and so much more. She creates these beautiful little pendants made from scrabble tiles (selling ffrom $11 - $15) - underneath all that beautiful paper and images is a common ordinary scrabble tile - remarkable! She also carries in her store: accordion books ( 3 for $14), journals ($18 - $28), magnet sets (4 for $12), etc... all with lovely paper and an attention to details.

On top of that she had a remarkable blog called "All Things Littleput". It gives much need advice to fellow Etysians that are just starting out or to those that need an added push when they feel like giving up. It is an invaluable source of ideas and inspirations not to be missed.

You can find her pendants in almost any theme or color theme - a truly unique gift at a great price! I am really partial to her "Looking Glass" series. These are photos that Ryan has taken and miniaturized. I love photography and it is impressive that Ryan has developed her photos to be tiny works of art around your neck - fantastic!

TQB Designs on DIY Alert!

Hey I was interviewed for a local blog called DIY Alert! I have to say that I rather enjoyed this interview process. The most interesting and favorite question was about my Color Block Friday's and why I have them. There is something in our minds about Friday. Something giddy;freeing. I like to celebrate the small stuff and I like to celebrate with color!

It's also interesting to see where a person can be inspired. This is the last question (and one the interviewer gives to everyone): Where are some of your creative spots in Portland: My #1 spot is definitely the Re-Build Center on N. Mississippi. If I'm feeling creative block or if I am just having a day when I NEED inspiration this is where I love to go. It works every time. If you haven't been to the Re-Build Center - what are you waiting for!

Color Block Friday - Luck O' the Irish - 2008.03.14

...and I don't even have a smidgen of Irish in me... But, how could I resist but to do Green for the Spring Season selection Color Block! Green is renewing, fresh, and representative of new growth, not to mention St. Patrick.

St. Patrick was credited with driving the snakes from Ireland (an early version of Samuel L. Jackson with "Snakes on a Plane"). St. Patrick's day came from his original Christian Feast Day (also may have also been the date of his death in 1737). When Irish immigrants came to American they started to celebrate this day, first in Boston, and then with the first St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City in 1766 (The History Channel).

Now that the history lesson is over (okay, I'm a history geek, I admit it), let's get on with the colors. I love green. I also have over 10 selections of green in my bead collection. Crazy I know but, I sometimes have a difficult time thinking up a color collection without adding some green.

With a fantastic selection of green in my Etsy Store - take some time to check out my newest earring design, made with cilantro - "Chained Earrings". These have a great, contemporary feel, especially with the long ear wire to balance out the chain dangle. I also have some new bracelets and necklaces in this mighty shade!

I think the bottom most images here has the best views of all my green shades and here's the list - starting clockwise from the top left: wasabi, vine, mint, granny smith, dill flower, pine, emerald, chartreuse, leaf, cilantro, olive, sage - 12 in all.

Esty Artist Feature - Anna Ruby King

Okay, I have to say that I didn't actually find this artist - she found me! Anna (of annrubyking), had put me in some her Treasuries and since then I have loved here work - of course, all things tiny fascinate me! I fell in love with these miniature birds made from fabric. She then places them strategically on a card with a clever theme - this one is "The Seedeaters", and sells them in a set of two for $11.50 (what a great price for all that work)!

Anna says that her work is inspired by all sorts of things especially, scientific drawings, diagrams, maps, illustrations and finally her great love for fabric. I absolutely love the cards she makes with the fabric. Such an original way to "color in" the image - whether it's chickens, horses or just a block background (this one is "Fabric Squares - Japanese Red and Blue" that sells in a set of two cards for $12.00) - it really is outstanding! I can't wait to buy some of her cards!

Her store is also full of the most marvelous and whimsical bird art. She does Original, ACEO and Gocco. Her central theme covers all aspects of birds (some flightless and some looking for nesting materials). This ACEO original has birds taking a shopping trip to look for that perfect wedding gift (this is "The Walking Birds White" one sells for $7.50).

So, take some time to check out her store - you'll never know what you may learn about birds - some may break out in song!

Color Block Friday - Crocus & a Walk

I know that in the past I have featured color groups: whites, browns, yellows, etc... but I was thinking... I would like to change things up a little bit. The groupings will still be in the mix, and I will showcase those once a season - look for the Spring Color grouping this month but, this week I am featuring an individual color. It is one of the more interesting colors in my collection. I am focusing on a new color(s) for the season each month - usually the color(s) that gets the most attention. And why not start with Spring!

I plan on working it like this: it could be one or four different colors each Friday - just depends on how busy I am. I will give you my inspiration with each color(s) that way I can share a little about the beautiful Pacific Northwest. The images will be taken from my neighborhood or beyond, but always in the PNW. Frankly, I wouldn't live anywhere else... well... let me give that some thought. But, for now I love where I live.

This last week I took a walk to my very favorite place to get coffee "Albina Press" on N. Albina. It is right off the Mississippi Neighborhood. I love Mississippi - especially "Pistil Nursery" this time of year: they have baby chicks and they are sooooo cute! I just love visiting them... Anyway, this is THE place for coffee in Portland, I think. The baristas are so good that they are sent to National competitions and often win or place! Not only do they have great coffee, but they also take the time to display the work of a local artist on their walls - so great! This is such a lovely place, with large windows in the front to let in tons of light (we crave it here in the PNW), and they have free wi-fi too. So bring your laptop, have a cup-o-joe and relax... it's definitely worth a trip. After my cup-o, on the walk home, I found these beautiful blooming crocus' and just couldn't resist the inspiration, the newness, the fresh flower feel from them - hey it's Spring!

So, as you many have guessed form the hint above, I am featuring "Crocus". I absolutely love this color! Really, to be honest, I've had this color in my repertoire for many years, and have sold it at some of my local retailers but the fact is... I have a hard time with purples. Not because I don't like the color, although, I do think it tends to have some problems getting along with the other colors in the
sandbox. But, because I just haven't wanted to battle that battle.

When incorporating it with other shades it was always so forced and I was never happy with the turnout.
However, with some time away (almost a year) and a little
patience, I think I may have a handle on this purple thing now and will feature my newest color collection "Bryant Park" over the next few days. I feel so accomplished!

TQB Designs - "Tincery, Quincery & Blunt"

The Queen Bead. Although I thought of my company name many years ago (I was 15 to be exact- and quite the giddy high school student then), the name has evolved over the years, as have the processes. I like to think that my intentions were original, but alas, it was not meant to be. So, officially TQB Designs stands for: Tincery, Quincery & Blunt. This is a medley of silly words with absolutely no philosophical or meaningful connection to me and what I do (thought I have say that I am quite blunt sometimes - that fits). Why, you say, did I choose this route for my business? Well, because "The Queen Bead" as well as their derivations: "The Queen Bee", "Queen Bead" "The Queen's Beads", etc... have been used over, and over, - and I feel that I have evolved past just the "bead" part of what I make. I truly love the metal work part of the jewelry making process, and strive for perfection in that as well. To me the metalwork should be as noticed as the beadwork.

In the end, I just want to have fun, with what I do (and keep people guessing at the same time). I often am asked at the shows I do: "What does TQB stand for?" ...well this is it. I know that I will keep evolving as will my work so why not throw in a little crazy? Crazy?... Perhaps so ... but I love what I do, no matter the name.

TQB Designs - Holiday Show Schedule

Okay - Here's the skinny on where to buy TQB Designs - direct from me - over the holiday season here in Portland, OR:

1. IHRH (I Heart Indie Holidays) - at The Wonder Ballroom NE Russell. This is a one day show on Sunday December 2nd from 12 - 5pm. There will be about 30 artists showing their wares and it should be great!

2. da Vinici Arts Middle School - This is bound to be one of the best Holiday Shopping Events this year. It takes place at the fabulous Portland Public School that has a arts centric curriculum. It is a 2-day event starting Friday, December 7th from 4 - 8pm & Saturday, December 8th from 10am - 4pm. This is great opportunity to help out one of our public schools as well as the children that attend, since 20% of all the sales go directly back to the school! There will be quite a large selection of artists at this event, so plan on attending - think of it as an investment in our children.

3. Crafty Wonderland "Super Colossal Holiday Sale". Okay - this is the Super Bowl of Craft Fairs! This one brags over 100 artists attending, on two floors, at the Norse Hall on NE 11th. On Sunday, December 16th from 11am - 5pm, the 1st 200 shoppers will get a fabulous "goodie" bag, so show up early to get in line. This is really an event not to be missed and how can you resist!? It's all our favorite "Crafty" Vendors in one place at one time - you're sure to finish your lists up at this enormous event. Plus with FREE Admission, a kids craft table - and don't forge the FULL BAR. What's better than throwing back a few and shopping! So, get to this one - you won't regret it.

4. If you can't make it to any of my shows, remember that I have several locations within Portland and Seattle, as well as across the country, where you can purchase TQB Designs. Please refer to my earlier blog entry on where to find a location near you!

First I would like to thank all of those that have supported me this year, either with purchasing my work or with your kind words - all of it is so appreciated and keeps me going day after day! It really means so much to me...

Anyway, here is the skinny on where to buy TQB Designs for the Holiday Season. Of course, if you are in Portland, OR - you can always get my work at my "flagship" store - Noun: A Persons Place for Things, on SE Belmont. This is a fantastic shop! The owner, Stephanie, has such a great eye for the gently and beautifully used, as well as the contemporary new for your person or home decor. If you haven't been by Noun, well... what's taking you so long?! Also on the East side, you can shop at PedX. Not only can you buy my work, but you can get a fabulous handbag and shoes to go with it - take care of all your accessory needs!

You can also purchase my work, if you live on the West Side of Portland, at a lovely little store on Liar Hill on SW Corbett, called Zeug. Shawn, the owner, also has a great mix of kitch and contemporary items for you and your home. She also has a great selection of cards. Lastly in Portland, you can shop at Silverado on NW 23rd.

If you live in Seattle, please stop by the Seattle Art Museum gift store. I will have quite a large selection there as well.

And of course, if you are lucky enough to live in or visit Hawaii, specifically Kauai, then please check out Julia Holman's charming shop called "Nest". Painted a beautiful, serene blue inside, you can find fantastic handmade things.

Friday Color Block - 11.09.2007

This is the month of harvest, abundance and giving thanks. I like to make it part of my morning, every day, to give thanks for my family and friends, a job that I absolutely love - what's better than making beautiful jewelry, and for really good 70% cocoa dark chocolate!

I believe that giving thanks, not only on that special day in November with your family, but everyday, will give you a much more positive outlook on life and bring you the things you most wish to happen. I give thanks for the good in people and some of the amazing things that people create in this world. Take a look around you and see the amazing things that others may do. Even if it's just buying lunch for someone who needs a little help; someone who is down on their luck. Though I don't have much, it makes me thankful that I'm not without a roof over my head!

This is definitely the seasons for giving - and I hope that you are giving handmade! The quality of a handmade gift isn't just in the item, but it's also in the anticipation. I absolutely love giving a handmade gift because I just know that the receiver will appreciate that a woman in Scotland, who makes beautiful felted flowers, made this gorgeous pin. I gave this one to my mother for her birthday, and she wears it on her coat everyday! People really care for handmade gifts so much more I've noticed. I've had customers say that they actually keep jewelry purchased from me in a separate jewelry box so that it doesn't get tangled or broken from the other jewelry they have. What a compliment!

So here are the color blocks for November - beautiful, rich shades of golden browns, in such versatile shade. Doesn't brown go with everything? I love paring it with unexpected colors like chartreuse or hot pink.

I hope that everyone enjoys the fall season while it's here and Happy Thanksgiving to Everyone ! Whether its a real gobbler or Tofurkey, enjoy everyones company and give thanks!

Weather Wednesday - November 7, 2007

This November has been quite wonderful so far. We here in Portland have definitely been spoiled by the warm October weather, and the blue skies have seemed to continue into the early part of November. Because of this, flowers in my yard seem to be confused. I looked out my kitchen window to discover that pansies I planted in May have started to bloom - and quite aggressively too! I loved to see them reaching for the light under all the leaves from my very naked maple tree.

Truly beautiful. If you don't live in the Pacific Northwest, you don't know what you're missing. Yes we do get many grey days, but man, the blue ones so make up for it and for me I seem to get a form of weather amnesia with these beautiful blue skies. Never thinking about the seemingly endless days of grey in store for December - February...

A Little Change

As many of you may know by now, I sell my work in many fine stores and galleries across the country. Well, the time has come for me to match the prices of these stores with those pieces I carry in my Etsy Store. These fantastic retailers help to support me and my work by ordering large quantities and showcase my work in such beautiful style. I know that many of you will understand, with the rising cost of living expenses, not to mention the increased cost of making sterling silver jewelry, I must finally raise my prices starting November 12th on existing items in my Etsy Store.

Many of my retailers have looked the other way, for over a year now, at my slightly lower Etsy prices, but alas, I cannot continue this dis-service to them. My prices will go up slightly, anywhere from $3.00 to $10.00 on the pieces in my store.

In order to off-set this I can make it a little easier with shipping costs. Again, starting November 12th, all shipping within the the United States and Canada is free and "Everywhere Else" is reduced to $4.00. As anyone who has ordered from me knows I package my jewelry in a beautiful little gift box covered in a festive paper with a riveted wrap band, folded paper crane ornament and enclosure card. This addition to your purchase will never change. Even though you know what it is, I think it is always nice to get a "gift", even if it may be from yourself! Additionally, for the upcoming Holiday Season - please let me know in your "comments" after purchase if you will require a blank enclosure card for gift-giving purposes - I'm happy to include a blank one with your purchase.

So for all those loyal to my work, thank you so much for your understanding and I know that even with this little change, you all will continue to support me and my work, just as my retailers do. I thank you so much for that and for the personal contact I get from each an everyone of you - it really makes my work so much more personally fulfilling.

First Friday Color Block - 2007.10.05

What do we think of when fall hits: back to school, Halloween, sweaters and sipping a hot chocolate (or hot buttered rum) with your loved-one. Anyway, I love this time of year. It conjures up images and colors of harvest moons, Firebirds across the evening sky, with pinks, reds, oranges and dark purples. Don't we all have memories of running through piles of leaves and the smell of wood burning in the fireplace?

Every October I am reminded of the beautiful drives we would take, in Bellingham, Washington, down Chuckanut Drive this time of year with the leaves turning to autumn vibrancy. We would also have fantastic visits with my Grandfather, Keith A. Murray. I love the fact that his birthday was on Halloween. I miss him...

So, with this months color block I decided to give you all the "Harvest" colors in my collection: oranges, yellows, golds, much like those beautiful October evenings and memories sitting on the stoop, watching that harvest moonrise.

Art in the Burbs - October 26, 27, & 28

I know that I told a few of you that I wasn't going to do any more shows until the Holiday Season. Well, the women running "Art in the Burbs" asked that I participate in their show this October and I couldn't refuse. I am a sucker for the arts, art education and especially anything that would benefit public school art programs.

So, you will see me, if you can make it out to the show: The Alberta Rider Elementary School, 14850 SW 132nd Terrace in Tigard , or you can call for directions at 503.431.4900. 20% of my sales will benefit the 14 Tigard-Tualatin Schools (elementary through high school), specifically distributed to their arts programs.

You'll also want to see my set up - they are providing a 10x10 space and I don't often get that, so I will have quite a nice set-up and selection with all the added space and extra table.

Extended Color Coverage - A Color Junkie Run Amuck

Hello, my name is Lisa and I am a color-aholic. I say screw the 10 steps and embrace your addiction. This is what I do: I make color samples, over and over, until I come up with exactly what I want. I love the process of naming my color themes. What can I say, my gimmick has to be theme centered! So, over the course of the Summer I came up with a number of new color combinations for the Fall/Winter Seasons:

First off, check out "500 Miles". For me it is reminiscent of driving I-5 through southern Oregon into California during the late Summer/early Fall. All the grass has turned blonde, and the fall wild flowers are blooming in muted shades, while the leaves start to change form green to shades of yellow, orange and red. (The colors here from top to bottom: crimson, tangerine, dijon, sangria, sweet pea, bone)

Also, the farthest southern destination you can drive in a day and still make it to a hotel at a descent hour: Ukiah, California (571 miles from Portland, OR). For those of you unfamiliar with this lovely little town - it really is quite centrally located to San Francisco, the Mendocino Coast and California wine country, and not too expensive.

The next combination I created is called "City Centre". I just loved the new colors I bought and had to use them again in another combo... to me it's a reminder of the sidewalks we stroll down (or run down because as city folk we seem to be in a hurry), and the softness of the periphery: the color of the autumn sky with its pinks, caramels and reds. Or, maybe its the leaf letting oxygenators, with the softness of their turning leaves and the hardness of the bark. At any rate, its a reminder that living in the city is beautiful in the fall... (The colors here from top to bottom: nude, pewter, mushroom, cinnamon, poppy, rootbeer)

Additionally, I had to create a combination with blue... I can't make a new combo with out some blue so "Water's Edge" is what a came up with. It includes a new green called "pine" that has a smooth, matte finish... quite lustrous, also included is another new color "bark". I love how the dark, dark brown sets off the rich mulberry. It really is the only purple bead I love, and use regularly. Lately, I have found it difficult to love purple beads. Most of the shades are hard to work with and want to fight with other colors - but not mulberry... sweet mulberry! (The colors here from top to bottom: faded denim, ocean, peacock, pine, bark, mulberry)

This combo so reminds me of when I lived in Seattle and when I would bike around Lake Washington. Such a gorgeous spot. And every now and then I would spot a grey heron taking a break in the grass on the shore. Really, if you haven't been to Seattle - PLEASE... make a stop. You won't be disappointed.

Lastly, I created "Betty's Apron" (colors include from top to bottom: duckling, tangerine, cinnamon mushroom, cilantro, chartreuse). Now, my mother came of age in the 50's & 60's, so Betty Crocker was very much a part of her young life. She still has my grandmother's old Betty Crocker Cookbook from the 40's! If you've never read though one of these old cookbooks, well... it hilarious! It has all kinds of advise on how to "look" for your husband... you get the idea - hilarious! At any rate... my mother loves aprons, and though her name isn't Betty, she was very much like Betty when I was growing up. She was always baking goodies and making home-cooked dishes with love. My absolute favorite were my mother's home made cinnamon rolls. That's the inspiration behind this color combination: I remember the cheerful greens and oranges in my mother's 70's kitchen, along with the warmth of the oven and the gorgeous smell of the cinnamon, butter and frosting filled dough... yummm...

So, I hope that color allows you to relive a beautiful or happy memory - it does for me every day, and please feel free to comment on your favorite color combinations I have created this fall. And, if you have any favorite colors - I'd love to see them..

So Happy! I can hear music...

Quite literally. I turned on my most favorite radio station here in Portland, KNRK Alternative Portland - 94.7, and they finally made their streaming compatible with MAC's - Hurray! So, for all those Mac users out there you can now stream KNRK and get all the bells and whistles with it. I love that you can see the name of the artist and song while its playing.

So check it out - it really is a great radio station and I guess my griping to them helped (sent them three annoyed, but polite, emails requesting Mac compatiblity).

Thank you KNRK! Now I can listen while I work... back to work.

Last Trip Before Summers End - Part I: The Oregon Coast

Yes, even though I have so much to do, I decided to play "hookie" and take a slam-out trip down to the Redwoods - those beautiful Ancient Giants of Humbolt County California. I visited as many lighthouses and I could along the way - but the really amazing thing about the trip was the weather: Sun! That's right folks, sun on the Oregon Coast; no rain, heavy wind, hoizontal sand, but sunny, warm, above 70 degrees and a breeze that was ever-so-slight.

I wanted to share some images of the Oregon Coast and the Redwoods, for those of you that haven't made it out to the West Coast yet or for those of you that do live near these feats of nature - get out there now while the weather is fantastic...

We first headed down I-5 to Eugene, which took us to Florence, on the coast. Our first stop was the Upquah Lighthouse. This is a beautiful, functioning and well maintained lighthouse on the Southern Coast of Oregon.

We next stumbled upon the Coquille River Beach. This was a find - mostly empty and the beach is absolutely beautiful. It's at the very bottom of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area (perhaps the reason it was deserted, and that was great), so there was a spattering of dunes with flat, open beach. I forgot how much I missed the breezy salt air...

Before we headed out to the beach though, we had to visit the Coquille River Lighthouse- 1896: This lighthouse guided boats safely across the shallow beach at the mouth of the Coquille river until 1939, it was then abandoned and replaced by an automatic light. But, in 1963, the Oregon State Parks Division acquired the lighthouse and some surrounding land (from the Army Corp of Engineers), and they restored the lighthouse in 1978! Right now, and I actually didn't know this, there are only 8 remaining lighthouses on the Oregon Coast. The Coquille River lighthouse was the last one built and it is on the National Register of Historic Lighthouses

Visiting the lighthouse here, I was happy to see that it was once again, in the midst of a face-lift. It gave me renewed confidence in our State Parks that this beautiful treasure wasn't left to rot. I captured a great shot of my Honey (Jason) contemplating the lighthouse (and other important matters I'm sure)...

This beach was an ideal spot for taking pictures.

It had flat AND hilly terrain, while the sun was starting to set - it think it was around 6pm.

I love how the light worked with shadows on the driftwood and grassy hills.

Heading further South to Gold Beach and stayed the night, but we woke up early to head even further South to the Avenue of the Giants...

Color Block Friday - 2007.09.21

First off - yes, I know, it is supposed to be "First Friday Color Block", but since I had quite a back log of orders, I thought I should take care of my customers before getting back to my blog - and I have missed it. See... look how intently I am typing this blog entry!

Anyway, as you know by now, Color Block Friday features a specific sampling of the TQB Designs color palate. This month I will take a look at what's hot for the coming 2007 - 2008 Fall/Winter season, and give you some food for thought (in the color realm).

This month has "New York Fashion Week", and I am so often inspired by what I see and so look forward to the new styles that surface. I get so much inspiration from the fabrics, shapes, textures, and just the energy that goes into this semi-annual event! So for all those color junkies, like me, check out the designers and see what they are creating... believe me it is quite inspiring! With all the new fashions and colors (according to Pantone as well) how can I keep from creating fantastic new designs and color combinations. You can also view the shows from last February 2007 - these showcase fashions and colors for this coming fall and decide for yourself what you like. At any rate, it's just supposed to be fun!

So, with that said, I want to give you my predictions for the best of the 2007 - 2008 Fall/Winter season as far my colors are concerned. Tangerine was hot this summer and I predict, with the addition of some deep reds, golden browns, caramels, deep pinks and greens that it will continue into fall. Also, combining my browns with champagne, and pearl, with a hit of any of my juicy berry shades, will be hot! I will also combine many of my whites to create a "winter coat" effect - besides, what's more chic than white no matter the season!
Also combining my strongest pink "nude" with black, smoke and pewter will bring in the metallic that continues to be strong. Gold is the color to have in your wardrobe this fall, and I will feature my muted gold "dijon" heavily this fall/winter, since it goes so well with reds and oranges, as on my new "Wishes" necklace.
Additionally, the one piece everyone should have this fall is a "Statement Necklace". Set aside the jewelry you need a magnifying glass to see - this fall and it's all about bold! Check out my Large Horseshoe Necklace (featured here in poppy), as well as my Giant Beaded Rounds! Big is in and tiny... well, save that for those hot summer days of 2008. You can also create that statement by layering necklaces. Mine work so well for that and I had more than one customer this summer purchase many to wear together: one layered the Sphere necklace in chartreuse ( I currently have one in "ocean" in my Etsy store) with the Petal Drop necklace in raspberry and another layered two of my Giant Beaded Rounds: one in wasabi and the other in maraschino - both fantastic looks!

I will create some of my own "Statement Necklaces" with long multi-sized bead lengths from 24" to 36" lengths as well as shorter lengths of 16" - 18" with large beaded rounds, as pictured here . Some of these necklaces will only be shown at the upcoming fairs I am
attending this fall and winter - and they will be quite spectacular! It's been awhile since I've made one of these and I really want to build up that selection for those of you that want one of my bigger and bolder pieces... I will keep you posted as to when and where I will show this year end.

Lastly, here are some of the new colors you will see this fall and into winter. I'm excited to use most of them together - I think they make a strong statement: bark, cinnamon, mushroom, bone, duckling, & cilantro.

My wish for everyone is to branch out with color this fall - try some tangerine and crimson with a splash of sage or muted gold. Layer it up or wear something bold on your neck, or wrist. Circles, Dots, Rounds, Spheres is calling you...

...and color block Friday should be back on track for October!

Weather Wednesday - Yeah... now it's sunny!

Okay... the no.1 complaint I've heard here in Portland this summer is that "WE HAD NO SUMMER!". Now, I know that everyone expects blue skies and 80+ degrees, but with September upon us and summer coming to a close, we can still enjoy the beautiful clear skies and the somewhat warm nights (well... yes... you do need a sweater, who am I kidding).

Our September weather has been absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I love the 70 - 72 degree days and the crisp evenings. The leaves are starting to change already - check out my dogwood tree... aren't the leaves absolutely gorgeous?! The skies in the fall seem so much bluer and the morning air takes me back to my school days - ah, school days. They seemed so difficult and full of drama: History of China was so alien to me at the time, and I loved my History of Women class (yes, I was a history major), but I had to drop my Anthropology class - the professor and I just couldn't agree...

I am mourning the last of my flowers to bloom this summer... and I will have a few blooming into early fall - but my abundance has gone until Spring when the first snowdrops appear.

Color Block Friday 2007.08.03 - Who Likes Blue? Raise your hand...

In honor of the blue skies of Portland, OR where I live, I am showcasing blue this month - the month of my birth! Yes, I will officially be one year older, perhaps wiser, and always different. I know that most people like to celebrate the New Year with resolutions - but I reserve mine for my birthday. What do I want to do in my next year of live? What goals have I attained or do I want to make new ones? Definitely time for a list.

But, for now, I am going to celebrate BLUE. It's such a soothing color. We often associate blue with water and sky - but what of other associations?
What would we do if we didn't have that something blue for our wedding day? Or the wild forget-me-nots your kids like to pick and leave on your porch? And let's not forget some of our favorite gemstones: sapphires, turquoise, apetite, london blue topaz, and my favorite: the rare of rare indicolite or indigolith (pure blue tourmaline).

So, if you think of other blue things you want to share feel free. A favorite toy from childhood, or maybe you're painting a room in your house?

Here are the blues in my repertoire. There are so many, since it is one of my favorite colors (in fact I don't think I have a favorite color anymore - much too hard to choose). I currently have 12 shades: baby bird, sky, faded denim, jet stream, sleeping beauty, turquoise, ocean, little boy blue, peacock, tourmaline, indigo, and midnight - whew! ... and I'm always looking for more.

This is Not a Toy! Says Who?

Okay. We all have a favorite tool. But, what are the cautions associate with them. Share your favorite...I'm sure we'll all get a chuckle. Mine is definitely on my tumbler and my computer keyboard: "Use of a keyboard or mouse may be linked to serious injuries or disorders. Well... I think I'm way past the serious disorder warning...
I actually think I've hurt myself more with my hammer than anything else. Longfellow is my witness.

So, with my toy, I make dull metal objects shiny - for those of you with tumblers you'll understand that it is always a surprise, even though I know how it will look - it's still like opening a present. Anyway, I have been able to use my tumbler more with my new MetalWorks series (and because I just want to make shiny pieces instead of brushed. Fickle) - here's a sneak peek (and some parts for my bead line too...):

With all this new work going on I am managing to fit in some very Special Orders for customers.

It's always great to make something very specific for someone, but the thing I love so much about making jewelry is people wear it in their everyday life; it goes with them when decisions are made!

So in the end, I'm trying to keep my fingers clear of the wheel, hammer, pliers, but I can't stay away from the keyboard... lost cause.

Weather Wednesday - August 1st

It's sunny today... working outside, tumbling. No, not me... jewelry parts. See what I made...

I've been crazy busy with special orders as well as orders for local stores that sell my work. My newest retailer is: PedX - Shoe Shangri- La in the Alberta Arts District. Check out their fantastic shoe inventory! The owner has a great selection of purses and wallets too - and of course, I think, the best time visit Alberta is Last Thursday. The August event should be fabulous - since the weather is so fine this time of year! My work should be in the store then too - and if you see it let me know what you think.

Anyway - since this is "Weather Wednesday", let's get at it - yes, it is another gorgeous day in the Pacific NW and I'm so happy to share it with you - wherever you may be. My favorite flowers are blooming (and the bees are loving it). The sky is blue above my huge Maple tree.

My cat is saying "Hi" (H.W. Longfellow - but I just call him Longfellow) and the sun is filtering into my garden, ...unfortunately my hostas are fading now.

Hope the weather is what you want, and at the end of August I'll be aching for RAIN!

What's a girl to do....?

As some of you may understand - I make each and every beaded round, oval, saucer and square in my collection - as well as 95 % of the metal work - soooo that's alota hours. I work between 10-14 hours/day in my creative processes - how 'bout you?

So... it has been up a bit with my upcoming show: Rebel Rabbit Craft Fair: Get Your Craft On! Don't forget, if you are in the Portland, OR area on July 29th - it's at the hipbone studios on E. Burnside from 11am - 4pm. I'll be there with lots-o-new work! Including some items from my new Continuous and Metalworks line.

Also, if you have been following me and this small bit of drama you will notice an improvement since 2 weeks ago on the work bench. Let's face it - don't we all think more clearly with an organized surrounding?

I would also like to take a moment and thank all my customers for such great sales, so far, this summer! To date this has been TQB's best year yet! Thank you all!... see still working (happily)!

I also want to announce, due to great demand on the part of my customers, that I will be coming out with a line of jewelry without my beaded rounds: Metalworks. It will consist solely of my metal work. I'm very excited about this and hope you visit my Etsy site around mid August to see the first pieces up. They will be clean, simple, modern - very much like the beaded round collection - but with a few surprises too...

Focus on the Art & Craft

Do you ever take pictures of your work space.. yourself... or perhaps your journals, just for documentations sake? Yes, I have to admit, I am one of those people (and have been doing so ever since I bought my first bright yellow "diary" from the neighborhood grocery store at the age of 11 - you know the type with the tiny lock and the keys that you loose right away. Somehow I got it open...). Anyway, I love to document my life. I believe that everyone has a story to tell. I have learned so much from other people through verbal stories, music, books, art, film, letters and yes... blogs,blogs, blogs.

I love to focus on the positive (and we need more of this in the world, for sure), ... so if you have a positive story you'd like to share, either about how your art has influenced your outlook on life, or maybe you're an art lover and not so artsy-crafty... how has art influenced your life. What are your favorite stories, music, books, art, film, letters and blogs - I'd love to hear about it! I know that these are simple questions but, most of the time the simplest things have the most touching and complexed answers.

I like to tell a story through pictures...

First Friday Color Block: Virginal or Bridal? No...Chic.

So, virgin you say... or was that bride? None-the-less, what traditionally comes to mind of course is WHITE: It can keep you cool, you can mix it with hard colors to make them softer, and it is always a very chic color choice. So, with this first color block, here are the shades of whites in my repertoire. We all need a little white once the weather starts heating up (or down. Down the aisle that is)!

Weather Wednesday - July 4th, 2007

Most people, I gather, are familiar with the weather patterns of the Pacific Northwest: wet. Well, I'm one to say that I love the weather here. It's temperate and mild and it's what keeps everything green - especially my garden. I don't have to water much in the summer, except August and early September when it's dry. But, when it's sunny it's beautiful!

But lets face it... I'm not really happy unless I'm working on my jewelry... really! So here are my 4 steps to a successful 4th:

Step 1: Notice the outdoors. It's an absolutely beautiful day... much too beautiful to be stuck in a basement studio. Go outside!

Step 2: Gather supplies. What would I do with out my trusty travel table. A hunk of beeswax, measuring tape, colored markers, beads... what more do I need?

Step 3: A place to sit. Definitely. I know its not your ordinary patio chair, but when was I ordinary? Everyone should have a fuschia slipper chair while working.

Step 4: Look content. Heck even happy! As you can see I am now.

For those of you not familiar with ihr - well you're in for a great treat! If you live in the Pacific Northwest then you will be able to see any one of three... yes three, holiday shows this winter. ihr is expected to have one in Northern Washington, Seattle, and Portland.

I am pleased to announce that my work will be showing in the SAM (Seattle Art Museum) store at the beginning of July, 2007. If you are planning a trip or live in Seattle, as many of my customers do, you can buy it all year long and support SAM at the same time!
